A mildly interesting selection around the shop today

Kinja'd!!!

Some 7 series with a blower and huge wheels

Kinja'd!!!

The blower is why it’s here, actually. Its clutch has failed. BMW wants to sell him a complete supercharger for $12,000, the pulley will fix it for under $1000.

Kinja'd!!!

One of the guys just picked this up for $2800, needs chain guides. Nice car otherwise.

Kinja'd!!!

For sale, know anyone? Cylinder head is freshly redone.

Kinja'd!!!

This is just a 540i/6 with an M5 badge and some shit on it. It’s loud. Stupid loud.

Kinja'd!!!

This, however, actually is a Dinan M5

Kinja'd!!!

Yes

Kinja'd!!!

My assistant manager’s R32 “RS”, with a bunch of scaffolding in it. Heading down to Fastivus tomorrow to dominate the autocross. Seriously, he’ll probably win it.

Kinja'd!!!

‘62 190SL that’s been here for a few weeks for various repairs. Currently redoing the carbs.

Starred for “Fuck Salt”. I’m on the wrong coast. This poor Nova has half-assed patches on top of half-assed patches. It’s like the galvanized clapboard shingle school of patching. Ugh.

This is the first one I’ve seen, and it’s actually an out of state car.

One of my techs owns it, I think he’s looking for around $10k. Just had the front seats redone as well.

Obviously BMW’s suggestion is crazy, especially if it's just a pulley, but I do kind of feel like B7s probably fall into that category of car where you shouldn't buy it if you can't afford stupid repair costs.

This is true. E65s in general fall into the category of car you shouldn’t buy at all, ever.

If replacing the power steering pump on a 535xi in the driveway wasn’t too bad how much worse can the E65's be?

That’s an easy job. If the PS pump is all that goes wrong with the 535, buy a lottery ticket. The E65 is all of the worse, they age very, very poorly and for all intents and purposes are not designed to be fixed.

Fun story: my mechanic has had an E65 sitting at his shop for probably a month because halfway through a ~$3000 engine repair job, the owner of the car told him he didn’t have the money to pay for it.

(My E92 has also been sitting at the shop waiting for an insurance claim for a new motor to go through but that’s all sorted and he’s starting working on it next week .)

Damn, I missed that post on your car, that’s brutal! Glad it’s at least being picked up by insurance, I wouldn’t want to foot the bill for that. Not surprised on your E65 story, we actually came to own one a couple of years ago because the guy approved significant repairs then dropped off the face of the Earth once we got into it. We had to lien sale the car to recoup our investment. They’re awful, which is a shame because the E38 is so good.

BMW factory remanufactured long blocks are surprisingly affordable, especially if you can find a dealer that will sell you one below MSRP.

My N55 was ~$3600 MSRP in July, but BMW raised their parts prices on 8/1 and it jumped to $~4400. My original estimate for insurance was done in July but they finally got ready to pay it in August, so I had to file a supplement for the higher engine cost.

I got the motor for $3500ish from a dealer in Maryland, and even with another $390 freight cost for the reman motor and returning my core, that’s still way cheaper than my local dealer here who wanted full MSRP.

With how long that E65 has been sitting there, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up a lien sale. It was there like the beginning of July when they did my suspension.
